Yamaha’s MotoGP Journey: From Rossi’s Glory to a Fight for the Top

Yamaha’s early MotoGP performance struggled, especially after the switch to the larger 990cc engine. A major turning point came in 2004 when Valentino Rossi joined, bringing Yamaha its first MotoGP victory and dominating the championship until 2009, except for 2006 and 2007 when he finished runner-up and third.

After Rossi’s reign, Jorge Lorenzo took over, winning world titles in 2010, 2012, and 2015, the latter being Yamaha’s last championship win to date. Despite this, Yamaha continues to strive for a return to the top.

Currently, Yamaha’s Monster Energy MotoGP team is led by Fabio Quartararo, 2021 world champion, and Alex Rins, known for his speed and experience. Andrea Dovizioso contributes to the bike’s development as a test rider. Recent tests in Sepang and Buriram show Yamaha is still competitive, with Quartararo demonstrating strong potential.

With a rich history of success thanks to Rossi and Lorenzo, Yamaha remains determined to reclaim the championship, continuously innovating and supported by sponsors like Monster Energy, Yamalube, and Eneos. Despite recent challenges, the team is focused on returning to its former glory.
