Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged both players and fans to turn Anfield into a “horrible” place for opponents as the Premier League title race enters its decisive phase.
Following their 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad, Liverpool sit 11 points clear at the top of the table, with Arsenal in second place and holding a game in hand. With 11 matches remaining, seven of which will be played at Anfield, the Reds are in prime position to secure a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.
Despite their strong position, Liverpool have shown signs of nervousness in recent games, including a 2-1 home win over Wolves and recent dropped points against Everton and Aston Villa. Van Dijk acknowledged that tension can creep in but believes the Anfield atmosphere can be a game-changer.
“I mentioned after the Wolves game that it’s pretty normal for humans to feel anxious at times,” Van Dijk said. “That could still be the case, but I think it only helps us and the fans to make Anfield horrible for the opponent—like we’ve done so many times before. The way we play helps with that as well.”
Encouraging fans to make their presence felt, the Dutch defender added: “Let’s make sure those seven home games are amazing and as loud as possible. Normally, that’s what happens anyway.”
Liverpool’s victory over City, sealed by goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, was their first top-flight win at the Etihad in nearly a decade. The result, combined with Arsenal’s loss to West Ham the previous day, strengthened the Reds’ grip on the title race.
With fans already chanting, “We’re going to win the league,” Van Dijk remains focused on the task ahead. “A couple of days ago, there was noise about other things, and things could have gone the other way,” he said. “The results this weekend have given the fans belief, but for us, it’s about focusing on the next game.”
Liverpool now turn their attention to Wednesday’s home match against Newcastle, with Van Dijk calling for full backing from the Anfield crowd. “It will be a big test again, and we need our fans to be in great shape.”
