Liverpool’s Title Dreams: Clinching at Anfield Against Arsenal?

Liverpool are edging closer to securing their 20th top-flight title, and one of the most dramatic possibilities would see them crowned champions at Anfield against Arsenal on May 10. After a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, Arne Slot’s side have established a commanding 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. According to Opta, Liverpool now have a 98.7 percent chance of winning the league, leaving Arsenal with just 1.3 percent.

While Liverpool could have wrapped up the title earlier, their schedule means they will play only one league match in March due to the international break, the Champions League Round of 16 ties against Paris Saint-Germain, and the League Cup final against Newcastle. This delay increases the chances of a potential title-deciding game against Arsenal in May. However, Liverpool could still seal the championship earlier, depending on Arsenal’s results. If they win their next three matches and Arsenal lose their next four, they could secure the title as early as April 5 against Fulham. Other possible clinching dates include April 26 against Tottenham or May 3 at Chelsea.

Liverpool have a history of dominant title-winning campaigns, having become the first team in Premier League history to clinch the trophy with seven games to spare in 2019-20. Only Manchester United in 2000-01 and Manchester City in 2017-18 have come close, winning the league with five games remaining.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains defiant, insisting he would concede the title “over my dead body.” However, history is not on Arsenal’s side. No team has ever lost the title from such a commanding position, and with six of Liverpool’s final ten games at Anfield, the likelihood of them lifting the trophy in front of their home fans remains high. Whether it happens against Arsenal or earlier remains to be seen, but Liverpool’s march towards the title looks increasingly unstoppable.
