Alex Marquez has revealed that it took him just five corners of the Thai MotoGP Sprint to realize that his older brother, Marc Marquez, was simply “too fast” for the rest of the field. The historic 1-2 finish by the Marquez brothers marked the first time in MotoGP history that siblings occupied the top two spots in the World Championship standings.
For Alex, the Sprint race was all about precision and strategy. After securing a strong start, he found himself in a battle with reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia. Despite Bagnaia’s early challenge, Alex held firm and carefully managed his position between one factory Ducati ahead of him and another chasing from behind.
Speaking after the race, Alex Marquez emphasized the importance of the opening moments, particularly in the sweltering conditions of Buriram. “The key to every Sprint, but especially when it’s hot, is the start and the first laps,” he explained. “I was able to make a good start, but then Pecco [Bagnaia] attacked me. In Turn 1, I had a really good drive and thought, ‘Okay, wait, relax, and try to make a good move there,’ and I did it.”
However, any hope of catching his brother quickly faded. “From corner five, I realized that Marc was a little bit too fast for us, so I just tried to go with him for as long as I could,” Alex admitted. Though he managed to stay within four or five tenths of a second for several laps, he soon began to feel the strain on his front tire. Rather than risk unnecessary mistakes, he opted to focus on maintaining his advantage over Bagnaia and securing second place.
With Marc Marquez’s dominant Ducati debut and Alex proving his strength in the Sprint, the Marquez brothers have firmly established themselves as serious contenders in the 2025 MotoGP season.
