Alex Marquez described the Thai MotoGP weekend as “super special” after securing a series of 1-2 finishes alongside his brother, Marc Marquez. The Gresini rider celebrated his podium at the Chang International Circuit, making history as the first set of brothers to hold the top two positions in the MotoGP championship standings.
Despite qualifying and finishing second in the Sprint, Alex admitted he didn’t expect to finish ahead of Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia in Sunday’s grand prix. He was thrilled with his performance and highlighted how important it was to secure strong results across the weekend. He acknowledged that before the race, he believed both Marc and Bagnaia had an edge over him. To counter this, he attacked early, aiming to build a gap in the first lap. However, he admitted that he may have used too much energy, both his own and his tyres’, leaving him at the limit by the end of the race.
Alex led for more than half of the grand prix after overtaking Marc on lap seven but was unable to maintain his lead until the finish. It was later revealed that Marc had deliberately dropped behind him to avoid a tyre pressure penalty.
While Alex thought he had a chance to take his first career MotoGP victory, he soon realized that Marc was conserving his energy for the final laps. He focused on staying smooth and avoiding mistakes, an approach that helped him secure a strong finish. At one point, he believed Marc was struggling with his front tyre, but when Marc overtook him again, he understood that victory wasn’t possible. Nevertheless, he was satisfied with keeping Bagnaia behind him.
Looking ahead, Alex admitted that he is still “one step” behind the factory Ducati riders but remains optimistic about his chances of securing a win later in the season. He emphasized the importance of consistency and learning from his experience in Thailand, hoping to build on his progress and fight for more top results as the season continues.
