If Marc Marquez surpasses Giacomo Agostini’s all-time record of 122 grand prix wins, Agostini has made it clear he won’t be thrilled—but he would still offer his respect.
In a candid interview with La Repubblica, Agostini admitted, “I certainly don’t wish him to succeed! I wouldn’t be happy at all, but I would congratulate him. He deserves it.”
While he acknowledges Marquez’s talent and work ethic, it’s understandable that Agostini—who has held the record for decades—feels protective of his legacy.
Agostini recognizes the mentality of a champion, knowing that once Marquez catches Valentino Rossi’s 115 wins and nine world titles, his next target will be the 122-win record.
“If it were up to him, he’d win all 44 races on the schedule without even leaving the crumbs. He will try, you can bet on it,” Agostini remarked, highlighting Marquez’s relentless pursuit of victory.
Despite his competitive feelings, Agostini respects what it takes to succeed at the highest level. “Winning is great. If we were in his place, we’d do the same,” he admitted.
While Marquez could break the win record, Agostini’s 15 world championships—achieved during an era when riders competed in multiple classes—remains an almost unreachable milestone.
If Marquez does surpass Agostini’s win tally, expect a mix of pride and bittersweet emotions from the Italian legend—acknowledging a new chapter in MotoGP history while reflecting on his own iconic career.
