Scrutiny on “Only Ducati Up for Grabs” as Rumors Intensify

The MotoGP rider market for 2026 is still in its early stages, but speculation is already heating up, especially regarding the only Ducati seat that appears to be available. Currently, Franco Morbidelli is on a one-year contract with VR46, making him the most vulnerable Ducati rider heading into next season. While he is riding the 2024-spec Desmosedici, many riders would likely be interested in taking over his seat.

Morbidelli, however, reminded everyone of his capabilities with a strong performance at the Argentina MotoGP, securing a podium finish after qualifying eighth. Speaking on the Crash MotoGP podcast, Peter McLaren acknowledged Morbidelli’s struggles in recent years, particularly during his time at Yamaha, where he faced criticism for not matching Fabio Quartararo’s success. Despite these challenges, Morbidelli showed resilience in Argentina, taking a strategic tyre gamble that paid off with his first podium since 2021.

The stakes for Morbidelli are high, as his Ducati ride is believed to be the only one available for 2026. Rumors suggest that KTM’s Pedro Acosta could be eyeing the VR46 seat if his current team’s performance does not meet expectations. Ducati’s competitive machinery makes it a highly desirable option for many riders, and Morbidelli knows he must consistently prove that he deserves to retain his spot. His confidence appears to be growing, and his performance in Argentina was a step in the right direction.

Last year, Morbidelli’s hopes at Pramac Ducati were hampered by a head injury sustained in pre-season, following an underwhelming stint at Yamaha that ultimately led to his departure. His MotoGP career was revived when VR46 offered him a contract for 2025, but he will need to produce more strong results to secure his future beyond that.

Meanwhile, Spanish media reports have linked Acosta with a possible move to VR46 next year. Like many riders, he may see Ducati as an appealing alternative if KTM fails to deliver a competitive package. As the season progresses, Morbidelli will need to deliver more standout performances to solidify his place in MotoGP’s most sought-after machinery.
