Real Madrid Players Face UEFA Inquiry After Atletico Match

UEFA has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by several Real Madrid players following their Champions League clash with city rivals Atletico Madrid on March 12.

European football’s governing body confirmed on Thursday that Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos, and Vinicius Jr. are at the centre of the probe, which concerns potential breaches of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.

The incident occurred after Real Madrid secured a dramatic victory over Atletico via a penalty shootout, earning a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. During the post-match celebrations, Real players were seen celebrating in front of the home crowd.

While UEFA has not specified the exact nature of the alleged misconduct, Spanish media reported that Atletico lodged an official complaint, citing inappropriate behaviour from Real players during their celebrations.

Video footage circulating on social media appeared to show some Real players dancing and making provocative gestures toward Atletico supporters, who in turn reacted by throwing objects from the stands.

UEFA confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and said it will release further details “in due course.”

The disciplinary action comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two Madrid clubs, and any potential sanctions could impact Real’s preparations as they continue their Champions League campaign.
