Badminton Secures Spot in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Badminton has officially been confirmed as one of the 31 sports included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This marks the sport’s 10th consecutive appearance since its Olympic debut in 1992 at Barcelona.

The 2028 edition will continue to feature all five traditional medal events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. A total of 172 athletes (86 men and 86 women) will compete for Olympic glory.

The IOC Executive Board approved the full event programme and athlete quotas on April 9. LA28 will feature 351 medal events in total, 22 more than Paris 2024.

A major milestone for LA28 is the achievement of near-complete gender equality. For the first time, all team sports will feature an equal number of women’s and men’s teams. Out of 351 events, 161 are women’s, 165 are men’s, and 25 are mixed events.

The decision reflects the IOC’s aim to create a programme that is gender-equal, globally appealing, cost-efficient, and athlete-focused.
