Alex Marquez is embracing the possibility of a dream showdown with older brother Marc Marquez in the 2025 MotoGP championship — calling it a “nice problem to have” as he continues his most consistent run in the premier class to date.
While Marc has been nearly unstoppable, winning seven of the first eight races for the factory Ducati team, Alex — riding for Gresini Ducati — has steadily built momentum, collecting seven consecutive runner-up finishes before a slip-up in Qatar. Heading into the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, Alex sits second in the standings, 17 points behind Marc and 9 ahead of reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia.
“Still many races to go in front of us,” said Alex. “So I hope to have that problem. It would be nice to arrive in the last races fighting for a championship with your brother. Honestly, that would be a nice problem.”
“To beat Marc, you need to make the perfect weekend”
Alex acknowledged the scale of the challenge in stopping his brother’s dominant form and admitted that only a flawless weekend could give him a chance.
“Marc is in a really good mood and riding really well. But over 22 races, you’ll always come to a track that’s more difficult,” he said. “The difference with him is that even when things don’t go well, he still finds a way to turn them around. To beat him, you need to make the perfect weekend in every session — and even then, it’s still tough.”
Eyeing First Jerez Podium
Returning to one of MotoGP’s most historic venues, Alex is also hoping to finally claim a premier class podium at Jerez — a circuit where he took his first Moto2 victory in 2017.
“For sure it would be super nice,” he said. “But we need to start the weekend with the same mentality we’ve had all year — go race by race and give our maximum.”
While Jerez holds emotional significance for the younger Marquez, he’s keeping his head down and focusing on consistency.
“It’s always special to be in Jerez. But we can’t lose our mentality. We need to work the same way and give 100%. That’s the key.”
