Alex Marquez Reveals Bold Jerez MotoGP Celebration: “I Didn’t Have the Balls to Do It Before!”

Alex Marquez made history at the Spanish Grand Prix—not just with his first-ever MotoGP grand prix win, but with a bold, long-awaited celebration he says took years to finally pull off.

After Marc Marquez crashed out on lap 3, Alex seized control and crossed the line first at Jerez, ending a near six-year wait since his last full-length race victory in Moto2 (2019 Czech GP). With a solid lead on the final lap, the Gresini Ducati rider waved to the roaring fans in the stadium section, mimicking a move Jorge Lorenzo famously did in 2011.

While the crowd loved it, his team wasn’t exactly thrilled.

“They already said to me ‘why did you do that with your hand?’” Alex laughed.
“But I remembered watching Lorenzo do it and thinking, ‘One day, I have to do that too.’ I had the chance in 2017 in Moto2, but I didn’t have the balls to do it.”

He continued:
“This time, I thought—maybe this moment won’t come again. I had to do it. The fans deserved it.”

Alex’s win also etched his name in the MotoGP record books: he and Marc Marquez are now the first-ever brothers to both win premier class races. With this result, Alex now leads the 2025 championship—just one point ahead of Marc—as the series heads to France.

The victory also extends Gresini’s winning streak to four consecutive seasons since partnering with Ducati in 2022, joining the likes of Bastianini, Di Giannantonio, and Marc Marquez in their list of grand prix winners.
