Isle of Man TT legend Michael Dunlop has humbly admitted he struggled during his recent visit to Valentino Rossi’s famed VR46 Ranch, calling his dirt track performance at the 100Km of Champions event “horrific.”
Dunlop, who became the most successful rider in TT history last year with 29 wins—surpassing the record set by his late uncle Joey Dunlop—was invited to the prestigious event in Tavullia, Italy, as a guest of honor. Paired with MotoGP sensation and self-proclaimed Dunlop fan Pedro Acosta, the TT icon finished last in the race but remained appreciative of the rare opportunity.
Speaking on the TT Live podcast, Dunlop shared how his life has changed since making TT history:
“Personally, I haven’t changed. I’m still a knob,” he joked.
“But yes, at the airport, people recognize you. On the Isle of Man, the pilot waves out the window at you. Small things like that. The TT has really become something worldwide now.”
Reflecting on his growing profile and the doors it’s opened, he continued:
“I’ve been fortunate to go to events I wouldn’t have normally been invited to—like the VR46 Ranch. I had no pace, but just getting the invite and being involved was great.”
He also spoke fondly of his visit to the Goodwood Festival of Speed:
“Goodwood was fantastic. They landed a helicopter at my house. I’ve had chances to do things I was invited to in the past but didn’t go. Life moves so quick, and I probably should take more of those chances.”
Still grounded despite the fame, Dunlop admitted his reluctance to dive into the spotlight:
“I suppose the backwardness in me… I don’t really do that.”
From the roads of the Isle of Man to Rossi’s dirt playground, Dunlop’s journey reflects a rare mix of world-class talent and unwavering humility.
