Carlo Ancelotti expressed pride in the legacy he’s built during his second spell at Real Madrid, calling the four-year period “unforgettable” as he prepares to take charge of the Brazil national team.
In Tuesday’s press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s LaLiga clash with Mallorca, Ancelotti shifted the focus from the match to his future. The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed on Monday that the Italian manager will begin his new role after the season ends. Ancelotti is set to travel to Brazil on May 25.
“There have been some unforgettable years that I’ll carry dearly in my heart,” said Ancelotti. “Football, like life, is full of cycles. I always knew that my time here would eventually come to an end.”
Despite no official statement from Real Madrid yet, Ancelotti insisted there’s no conflict: “The club will release a statement when they feel the time is right. There’s no issue. I’ve never had problems with Real Madrid, and I never will. This club will always live in my heart.”
Real Madrid are currently facing a trophyless season, sitting seven points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona. Their final game of the season is at home to Real Sociedad on May 25, the same day Ancelotti departs for Brazil.
The 65-year-old, one of football’s most decorated coaches, has won 11 titles during his second stint in charge. Xabi Alonso, former Real Madrid midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen coach, is widely expected to succeed him.
“I’m very fond of Xabi. He doesn’t need any advice—he has all the tools to become a great coach,” Ancelotti said.
“If someone had told me I would win 11 titles in four years, I would’ve signed immediately. This season didn’t go as we hoped, but overall, it’s been an unforgettable era.”
Ancelotti concluded by thanking the club and fans: “A thousand thanks to this club. It’s the end of a spectacular chapter. I’ll always be a Madrid fan.”
