Marc Marquez Claims Aragon Pole After Intense Qualifying Battle

Marc Marquez maintained his grip on the 2025 Aragon MotoGP by securing pole position, but it didn’t come easy. The world championship leader had to dig deep for his fifth pole of the season after losing the top spot late in Q2 to both Alex Marquez and Franco Morbidelli.

After dominating practice, Marc nearly broke the lap record on his first flying lap, then returned to the pits while Alex stayed on track and closed the gap to just 0.221s. On the final runs, Alex put in a strong lap to briefly take pole by just 0.022s, before Morbidelli pushed Marc down to third.

With just a minute to go, Marc responded under pressure, setting a new lap record and reclaiming pole position by 0.260s. Ducati’s factory star Francesco Bagnaia rounded out an all-Ducati top four ahead of KTM’s Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder.

Alex Marquez and Joan Mir entered Q2 with only one bike each after crashes in final practice.

Fabio Quartararo, who had claimed pole at the last three events, advanced through Q1 to secure ninth on the grid. Fabio di Giannantonio topped Q1 but only made one run in Q2, settling for tenth, likely due to a tyre shortage.

Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi had a disastrous session. A crash at Turn 3, followed by a technical issue on his second bike, left him with just one flying lap—putting him 20th on the grid.

Track position may prove crucial, with the right and middle side of the grid offering more grip compared to the dusty left. As Maverick Vinales noted, “If I can start 4th then it’s the best position I think. Clean track and our bike starts really fast.” He will instead start eighth for Tech3, narrowly avoiding the dirty side.

Luca Marini (HRC) and rookie Ai Ogura remain sidelined with injuries and have not been replaced.

Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez returns for his fourth race of the season as a wild-card entry, while Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori continues to fill in for injured reigning world champion Jorge Martin.

The first official in-season MotoGP test of 2025 will be held on Monday at Jerez.
