Bayern Munich opened their Club World Cup campaign in devastating style on Sunday, crushing New Zealand side Auckland City 10-0 in Jeddah. The German champions delivered a relentless display of firepower, with Jamal Musiala netting a second-half hat-trick on his return from injury and Kingsley Coman bagging a brace.
Coman set the tone early, heading in a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 6th minute. A flurry of goals followed, with Sacha Boey, Michael Olise, and Coman again finding the net in a remarkable three-minute spell. Thomas Müller added a fifth just before halftime, assisted by Olise, who impressed in his competitive debut.
At the break, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany rang in the changes, including handing 17-year-old Lennart Karl his first senior appearance.
“He showed lots of quality — it was great for him and for Bayern,” Kompany said post-match.
Musiala stole the spotlight in the second half with three goals in just over 15 minutes: a trademark curler, a confidently taken penalty he earned himself, and a poacher’s finish off a defensive error. Müller completed his brace in the 89th minute to wrap up a record-setting rout — the biggest win in the history of the men’s Club World Cup.
Despite the heavy loss, Auckland City coach Ivan Vicelich remained proud:
“To be proud of the players is what we’re after. It’s a dream coming from an amateur level to play in this environment.”
The 13-time OFC Champions League winners now face Benfica on Friday, while Bayern prepare for a marquee Group C clash against Boca Juniors.
“The next game against Boca will be the highlight of the group stage,” Kompany said. “Even if I weren’t Bayern coach, I’d have attended this game. It will be special.”
