Mbappe Doubtful for Real Madrid’s Club World Cup Opener as Alonso Faces Debut Test

Real Madrid could be without Kylian Mbappe for their Club World Cup opener against Al Hilal, as the French striker missed training due to illness. New head coach Xabi Alonso is set to lead the team for the first time in Wednesday’s Group H clash at Hard Rock Stadium.

“Kylian felt a little better this morning, but not enough. With the heat, it was better for him to rest. We’ll decide tomorrow morning,” Alonso told reporters. Alongside Mbappe, key players Antonio Rudiger and Eduardo Camavinga are also expected to miss out due to physical setbacks.

“Rudiger pushed himself to the limit this season. He might not be ready yet, but he’ll likely be the first to return. Camavinga is improving too, but needs more time,” Alonso added.

Al Hilal, under new coach Simone Inzaghi, present a tactical unknown for Madrid. “They haven’t played a match with Inzaghi yet, so it’s hard to anticipate their approach. But we must focus on ourselves, be hungry to win, and work together as a team,” Alonso said.

The former midfielder also addressed squad dynamics, particularly the right-back role where Dani Carvajal now competes with Trent Alexander-Arnold. “It’s a privilege to have players of this level. Trent is more versatile, but Carvajal has strong character and competitiveness. Trent’s first impressions have been very positive.”

On Jude Bellingham, Alonso believes the England international is more effective when deployed deeper in midfield. “Jude covers a lot of ground. He thrives when starting in deeper positions, allowing his arrival into attacking areas to be more impactful.”

Alonso also praised Luka Modric, who is expected to leave the club soon. “He’s a player of his era. It’s a luxury to have him around. His connection with younger players and influence in the dressing room is special.”

Real Madrid begin their campaign against Al Hilal amid uncertainty over several key players, but Alonso remains focused on forging a united, competitive side for his debut in charge.
