Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah has officially signed for Bayer Leverkusen in a club-record transfer deal reportedly worth up to €40 million, including €10 million in performance-based add-ons.
The deal, reported by Kicker and The Athletic, also includes a €60 million buy-back clause that allows Liverpool to re-sign the 22-year-old from summer 2027.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes praised the signing:
“We are very happy to be able to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders. He made a very impressive contribution to a Liverpool defence full of world-class players.”
Quansah, an England U21 European champion in 2025, joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of five and made his senior debut in 2023. He featured 58 times for the Reds, lifting the League Cup twice and contributing to their 2024/25 Premier League title win.
With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate holding the first-choice centre-back spots at Liverpool, Quansah often played a backup role but impressed with his composure and physicality. He is expected to be a direct replacement for Leverkusen’s former captain Jonathan Tah.
“The ambitious targets here were clearly explained to me during the negotiations,” said Quansah. “It’s a great role and challenge for me to be part of the current Leverkusen rebuild.”
Leverkusen, who made history by going unbeaten in the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, struggled to defend their title last term and finished 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich. Quansah’s arrival signals a major reinforcement at the back as they look to bounce back.
