Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo has completed his move to Manchester United from Brentford, signing a contract until 2030 with an option for an extra year.
The 25-year-old winger, who scored 20 goals in 38 league appearances last season, joins for a reported £65 million, with an additional £6 million in potential bonuses. Tottenham, managed by Mbeumo’s former coach Thomas Frank, were also in the running before United’s improved offer was accepted.
Mbeumo revealed that he grew up supporting Manchester United and couldn’t turn down the opportunity to play for the club he has always admired.
“This is a huge club with world-class facilities and passionate fans. I’m determined to help the team compete for top honours,” he said.
Under new coach Ruben Amorim, United are undergoing a squad rebuild. Mbeumo joins fellow signings Matheus Cunha from Wolves and 19-year-old Paraguayan defender Diego Leon. Amorim is aiming to bounce back from a disappointing season in which United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee underperforming last season, Mbeumo is expected to bring more firepower to the front line. He leaves Brentford after six years, where he scored 70 goals and made 51 assists in 242 appearances, helping the club secure Premier League promotion in 2021 and a 10th-place finish last season.
Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles, said the timing was right for Mbeumo to move on and praised his contribution to the club’s rise.
Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox added that Mbeumo’s addition is another key step in rebuilding the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. The team will travel to the US this weekend for pre-season, starting with a match against West Ham.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is expected to join Barcelona soon, while Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are also linked with moves away and are unlikely to join the US tour.
