Lionel Messi and Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba could face suspension after pulling out of Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game against Liga MX, set to take place in Austin on Wednesday.
Both players had been selected to start in the annual showcase event, but a league source confirmed that Inter Miami informed officials on match day that the duo would not participate.
According to MLS rules, any selected player who withdraws from the All-Star Game without a valid medical reason may face a one-game suspension. As of now, MLS has not confirmed any disciplinary action and will await clarification from the club regarding the nature of the withdrawals.
Their absence had been foreshadowed by Miami head coach Javier Mascherano, who had hinted over the weekend that he preferred the pair to rest. “The players are called up. I’d prefer they rest, but it’s not my decision,” Mascherano said.
Messi (38) and Alba (36) have both struggled with recent injuries and were part of Inter Miami’s demanding campaign, including their participation in the recent FIFA Club World Cup.
A final decision on any potential punishment is expected once MLS officials speak with the club.
