Jorge Martin says he “still feels like a rookie” at times on the Aprilia MotoGP bike after struggling to understand new components during the Valencia post-season test.
The 2024 world champion completed 52 laps on Tuesday as Aprilia introduced several updates. Martin evaluated the chassis used recently by team-mate Marco Bezzecchi and tested new aerodynamic concepts. He ended the day 18th but said the updated chassis felt more natural and better suited to his riding style, while the new aero parts were difficult to interpret.
Martin noted that changes to the fairing were especially hard to understand and require further discussion before Malaysia testing. He added that large aerodynamic shifts are major decisions, particularly after ending the season with a strong base feeling.
The testing day also included ergonomic experiments such as different tanks and footpegs. While some adjustments were positive, the limited time made it difficult to adapt, and he reverted to the standard setup. He plans to switch footpegs in Malaysia to improve riding comfort and style.
Martin highlighted that acceleration and drive out of corners remain his main weakness on the Aprilia, an area that has traditionally been one of his strengths.
Returning from a shoulder injury sustained in Japan, Martin admitted he was still not at full physical or mental confidence. He avoided unnecessary risks and focused on building rhythm rather than chasing a time. Despite this, he improved his pace on the medium tyre compared to the race weekend. He did not attempt a time attack with soft tyres.
Martin hopes the winter break will help him regain full fitness and clarity so he can push at his maximum level next season.
