Slot urges Liverpool to eliminate costly errors as season reaches critical stage

Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his side can still finish a difficult season strongly if they address what he described as a damaging combination of defensive mistakes and wasted chances.

The Reds can secure a place in the Champions League last 16 with a home win over Qarabag on Wednesday, following eye-catching victories against teams such as Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Marseille in Europe.

However, domestic form has been a concern. Liverpool are without a win in five Premier League matches, dropping to sixth in the table and putting next season’s Champions League qualification at risk.

Despite winning only their second league title since 1990 last season, Slot has faced increasing scrutiny, especially with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso available after leaving Real Madrid.

Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth last weekend ended a 14-match unbeaten run in all competitions, although that sequence included several frustrating draws. Slot pointed out that his team has often created more chances than their opponents but failed to capitalise, while also being punished defensively.

He stressed that improving performance in both penalty areas is crucial if Liverpool are to achieve something special this season. Improving only one aspect would lead to a merely acceptable campaign, while failing to fix both issues could result in sustained pressure and criticism.

Slot’s second season at Anfield has also been disrupted by injuries. Forward Alexander Isak is set to miss most of the remaining campaign after breaking his leg, while Liverpool are short of defensive options ahead of the Qarabag match.

Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are sidelined, and Ibrahima Konate is on compassionate leave following the passing of his father. As a result, midfielder Wataru Endo is expected to fill in at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk, who at 34 is the only recognised centre-back available.

Slot praised Van Dijk’s fitness and reliability, highlighting the importance of having a senior figure capable of consistently playing full matches.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are understood to have halted a potential move that would have seen Andy Robertson join Tottenham. Slot indicated he expects the veteran defender to remain at the club.
