Ducati Unveils 850cc MotoGP Prototype with Michele Pirro at Misano Test

Ducati has taken a significant step toward the 2027 MotoGP era, debuting its 850cc prototype on track at Misano with veteran test rider Michele Pirro at the controls. The test, held during a V2 Champ Academy session, offered the first public glimpse of Ducati’s next-generation ‘GP27’ machine.

Images and footage from GPOne.com captured Pirro piloting the Desmosedici GP27, which features the new 850cc engine, enhanced aerodynamics, and Pirelli tyres—key elements required by the incoming 2027 MotoGP regulations. Ducati has confirmed that Pirro was indeed riding the 850cc prototype, joining KTM and Honda as the first manufacturers to reveal their new-spec machines in action.

Pirro, Ducati’s trusted factory test rider and recent substitute for Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer, is leading the early development of the 2027 bike. The test at Misano marks one of the few public outings for the project, though the number of private tests conducted remains unclear. World Superbike points leader Nicolo Bulega, who brings valuable Pirelli experience, is expected to join Ducati’s test program starting in June.

Despite wet conditions limiting track time, Ducati MotoGP team manager Davide Tardozzi was present to oversee the proceedings, with testing set to continue through Tuesday.

Pirelli, the series’ incoming tyre supplier, is currently supporting individual development tests for manufacturers. The next group test for MotoGP test riders is scheduled for Misano in late May, while full-time MotoGP riders will sample the 2027 bikes and tyres at an official post-race test in Brno this June.

Ducati’s 2027 rider line-up remains unconfirmed as contract negotiations continue with MotoGP management, but speculation points toward Pedro Acosta joining reigning champion Marc Marquez in the factory Lenovo squad, with Pecco Bagnaia tipped for a move to Aprilia.

Aprilia and Yamaha are now the only manufacturers yet to publicly run their 850cc prototypes on track.
