Marc Marquez expressed confusion and frustration after his early crash at the Spanish MotoGP, admitting fault to Ducati but also admitting he “didn’t understand what happened.” The incident, which took place on lap 2 behind his brother Alex Marquez, ended Marc’s hopes of capitalizing on his Sprint race victory from the day before and dealt another blow to Ducati’s championship challenge.
In the aftermath, behind-the-scenes footage from Ducati’s Inside Ducati YouTube series captured Marquez’s immediate reactions. “Sorry, my mistake,” Marquez told Ducati Corse general manager Gigi Dall’Igna upon returning to the garage. He elaborated to crew chief Marco Rigamonti, “As soon as I touched the gas, I lost it.”
Rigamonti, reviewing the data, pointed out, “You entered the corner a bit before… Before touching the gas, you were already on the limit.” Marquez, still perplexed, replied, “There are days when I understand why I crashed. Not today… I didn’t understand what happened. On the second lap, you can’t crash like that… We always take the good… We were fast. We’ll work tomorrow.”
Despite the disappointment, Marquez retained his sense of humor, asking if his crashed bike was “broken in two” ahead of Monday’s official test. He was assured that only the fuel tank had detached, and Rigamonti joked that one of the two bikes needed disassembly anyway to incorporate new parts.
Marquez returned strongly in Monday’s test, logging 68 laps and finishing as the top Ducati rider in fourth—focusing particularly on aerodynamic updates. The early exit may have left him physically fresher for testing, but it also leaves him 44 points behind title leader Marco Bezzecchi, while team-mate Pecco Bagnaia also failed to finish at Jerez due to a technical issue.
As Ducati regroups, Marquez and the team will be seeking answers—and a way forward—in the coming rounds of the MotoGP championship.
