The Philadelphia 76ers have fired Daryl Morey as president of basketball operations following the team’s sweep by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. While Morey departs after six seasons at the helm, head coach Nick Nurse will remain in his role.
Sixers managing partner Josh Harris announced the move Tuesday, acknowledging the organization’s disappointment after again failing to advance past the second round in the NBA playoffs. “We have fallen well short of our own expectations and failed to deliver in the way this city deserves. That bothers me deeply,” Harris said. He added that the decision to part ways with Morey came after discussions about the need for a fresh start.
Bob Myers, the former Golden State Warriors general manager and architect of four NBA championship teams, will oversee the basketball operations department on an interim basis. Myers will also lead the search for Morey’s replacement.
Under Morey, the Sixers posted a 270-212 regular season record but only went 28-26 in the playoffs. Philadelphia returned to the postseason this year after a disappointing 24-58 campaign in 2024-25, the only year under Morey’s tenure that the team missed the playoffs.
Myers, who joined Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment as president of sports in October 2025 after a stint as an ESPN commentator, brings championship experience and will be tasked with charting a new course for the franchise.
