Switzerland and Bosnia eye crucial win in wide-open Group B

Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina will look to gain the upper hand in a tightly contested World Cup Group B when they meet at Los Angeles Stadium on Thursday.

The group remains completely open after all four teams recorded 1-1 draws in their opening matches, leaving every side level on one point heading into the second round of fixtures.

Switzerland were moments away from defeating Qatar in their opener after Breel Embolo’s early penalty put them ahead. However, a stoppage-time own goal denied Murat Yakin’s side victory and left the Swiss frustrated after dropping two valuable points.

Bosnia also had to settle for a draw after Jovo Lukic’s first-half strike gave them the lead against co-hosts Canada. Despite a disciplined display, they were unable to hold on and eventually shared the points in Toronto.

A victory on Thursday could put either side in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage, with Bosnia particularly aware that a win would leave them well placed ahead of their final group match against Qatar.

Switzerland will be looking to rely on their strong World Cup pedigree. The Swiss have lost just one of their last eight World Cup group-stage matches, recording four wins and three draws during that span. They have also scored in nine of their last 10 group games at the tournament.

Yakin’s men have suffered only one defeat in their last 15 internationals, collecting eight wins and six draws, although their late collapse against Qatar highlighted the need for better game management.

Bosnia, meanwhile, continue to build confidence under Sergej Barbarez. The Dragons are unbeaten in nine matches, though six consecutive draws underline their difficulty in converting solid performances into victories.

The two nations have met only once before, with Bosnia claiming a 2-0 friendly win in Zurich in 2016.

With every team level after the opening round, Thursday’s encounter could prove decisive in determining the shape of Group B heading into the final set of fixtures.
