Lionel Scaloni hails Argentina fans as team’s ’12th man’ ahead of Cape Verde clash

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has praised the unwavering support of the nation’s fans, describing them as the team’s “12th man” ahead of their World Cup Round of 32 showdown with Cape Verde in Miami.

Thousands of Argentine supporters have travelled to Florida to back the defending champions, adding to the large local Argentine community that has grown since captain Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023.

With an estimated 60,000 Argentina fans expected inside Miami Stadium, Scaloni believes their presence provides a huge boost rather than extra pressure.

“Their support is something that I love,” Scaloni said during his pre-match press conference.

“We feel their support, they give us strength and it’s never extra pressure. I hope they enjoy watching the team and hopefully we can give them something to celebrate.”

The World Cup-winning coach described the supporters as an essential part of Argentina’s success.

“Our fans are our 12th player. Every one of our players grew up supporting Argentina, and now they’re the ones wearing this shirt. I think that says a lot about the character of this team.”

Miami turns sky blue and white

Argentina colours dominated Miami as hundreds of supporters gathered for a traditional “Banderazo” pep rally on the eve of the match.

Sky blue and white flags filled the beachfront park, while banners featuring Messi and the late Diego Maradona decorated the area. Fans grilled traditional Argentine barbecue, beat drums and sang throughout the day after an early thunderstorm cleared.

The festive atmosphere highlighted the strong connection between Argentina and Miami, where Messi has become a local icon since joining Inter Miami.

Fans confident of victory

While Scaloni remained respectful of Cape Verde, warning against underestimating the tournament debutants, many supporters were far more confident about Argentina’s chances.

One fan, Geronimo Guenen, predicted a comfortable victory.

“Argentina will win 3-0 or 2-0. We have everything needed to win. This is a very good team, Messi is in excellent form, and we can compete with anyone.”

Argentina enter the knockout stage as one of the tournament favourites, with Messi continuing to inspire the reigning champions in what could be his final World Cup campaign.
