Jose Mourinho says he is “very happy” with his revamped Real Madrid squad, despite missing out on top midfield target Rodri, who ultimately signed for Barcelona. Madrid bolstered their side with six new signings this summer, including record arrival Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva, and Marc Cucurella.
Mourinho insisted his squad is “closed,” though he acknowledged the transfer window could always bring surprises. “In my head the squad is closed closed, and I have not asked for anyone. I am very happy with the players I have,” Mourinho told reporters.
With the departures of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in recent years, Madrid’s midfield has seen significant changes. The team started the season with a 2-1 win at Espanyol, featuring Silva and Federico Valverde in the center of the park.
Mourinho confirmed that Aurelien Tchouameni will miss the midweek clash against Real Sociedad as he continues his recovery: “You can finish a season suffering… but you can’t start in August not at 100 percent.”
He also expressed full confidence in Valverde’s role in midfield, explaining that modern football requires positional flexibility: “For me he is a player for the centre of the pitch… I don’t want to identify Tchouameni as the No. 6, Camavinga No. 6, Fede No. 8, Bernardo No. 10… things dilute during games.”
Despite missing out on Rodri, Mourinho believes Real Madrid have the depth and quality to compete on all fronts this season.
