Lando Norris has completed his first full test in McLaren’s MCL-HY Le Mans Hypercar at Portimao, sparking speculation about a possible Le Mans debut for the reigning Formula 1 champion in 2027.
Just days after the Spanish Grand Prix at Madring, Norris logged 38 laps and 177 miles at the Algarve International Circuit. Working alongside McLaren’s 2027 Hypercar drivers Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor, Norris tested development items and provided key feedback drawn from his F1 experience.
“It was great for them to give me a chance to have a bit of fun and try something new, particularly during their busy preparations for next year,” Norris said. “I hope I was able to bring a different set of feelings, comments, and perspectives on things, which is useful for the team in this crucial testing period… It was a fun day in a quick car on a cool track, helping the team prepare for the start of WEC next year.”
The test comes after Norris first sampled the MCL-HY at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has previously suggested that both Norris and Oscar Piastri could appear in the World Endurance Championship’s blue-riband event, although a Le Mans entry would depend on the F1 calendar and potential schedule clashes.
McLaren Hypercar team principal James Barclay praised Norris’ rapid adaptation and feedback, leaving the door open for future outings: “He adapted very quickly, integrated seamlessly and provided valuable feedback to support the car’s development. We look forward to welcoming him back into the McLaren Hypercar Team soon.”
With Le Mans set for June 12-13, 2027, and F1’s schedule still to be confirmed, the motorsport world will be watching closely to see if Norris lines up at La Sarthe.
