Saudi Arabia Clinch Gulf Cup, Ending 22-Year Title Drought

Saudi Arabia captured their first Gulf Cup title in 22 years with a commanding 2-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, thrilling home fans at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.

The hosts came out firing, breaking the deadlock just 11 minutes in as winger Hammam Al Hammami scored with a deflected shot from outside the area. The lead doubled only two minutes later when Feras Al Brikan found the net from close range, giving Saudi Arabia a quick and decisive advantage. The momentum nearly produced a third goal when Saleh Abu Alshamat—who shared the pitch with his brother Mohammed—struck the crossbar.

After the match, head coach Georgios Donis praised his team’s focus and resilience:

“We are very happy… there were many difficulties, but the players showed concentration and discipline. We turned those difficulties into a title—this is important. We were the best team in the competition, and this win gives us confidence for the future.”

The UAE pushed hard to get back into the game and were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute, but the decision was overturned by VAR. In the second half, Saudi goalkeeper Mohamed Al Owais made a crucial save from Sultan Adil, and Fabio Lima hit the bar in the closing minutes to preserve Saudi Arabia’s clean sheet—a record they maintained throughout the tournament.

This Gulf Cup triumph marks Saudi Arabia’s fourth title and first since 2004, providing redemption after an early exit from this year’s World Cup. Coach Donis reflected on the team’s growth:

“After the World Cup, we learned from our mistakes and improved. The result now reflects our hard work.”

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia is preparing to host the 2027 Asian Cup where they’ll face Kuwait, Oman, and Palestine from January 7 to February 5.

Player of the Tournament Al Hammami summed up the team’s motivation:

“We have an even bigger challenge with the Asian Cup. This title gives us even more motivation to achieve success for Saudi Arabia.”

Saudi Arabia’s long wait is over—the Gulf Cup is home once again.
