Aleix Espargaro Returns to MotoGP at Mandalika: “Life Gave Me Another Chance”

Six months after fearing his riding days were over, Aleix Espargaro is back

Aleix Espargaro is making an inspiring return to MotoGP action at Mandalika this weekend, grateful for “another chance” after enduring a grueling six-month recovery from serious back injuries.

The Spanish rider fractured four vertebrae in what he described as the “worst accident of his career” during private testing with Honda at Sepang in April. Following surgery to remove metalwork from his back, Espargaro gradually returned to fitness, making his testing comeback just last month.

A three-time MotoGP race winner with Aprilia, Espargaro’s injuries forced him to miss planned race appearances earlier in the year. With MotoGP set to ban wildcards from 2027, and due to a wave of injuries and illness in the Honda camp, Espargaro was called up to race at Mandalika.

“I’m feeling very fortunate to be back here, because I struggled more than it might have looked from the outside,” Espargaro told reporters. “It’s been a very tough six months. I’m still not perfect and have some pain, but I think it’s something I’ll have to live with forever—I really destroyed my back! But I’m so happy that life gave me another chance to ride, and it’s always special to be part of HRC.”

Espargaro admitted the recovery process has rekindled his motivation, especially after initially stepping away from racing two years ago.

“Two years ago I decided to stop racing—I didn’t have the strength or energy. But after such a hard six months, I realized how much I missed it. There were moments I doubted I’d ever ride again, so now I’m really happy and motivated for one more chance.”

Looking ahead, Espargaro will have to balance his competitive drive with the needs of Honda’s test program for the new 850cc prototype, especially as other test riders remain sidelined.

“I haven’t ridden much since January and only started gym work a month ago. I hope Joan Mir can return soon, but if not, I’ll keep racing and testing. We have a big test program ahead, and with Takaaki Nakagami also recovering from surgery, it’s going to be a busy end to the season for me.”

Espargaro’s next task comes immediately after the Grand Prix, as he continues development work on Honda’s 850cc bike. For now, his presence at Mandalika is a testament to resilience—and a reminder that sometimes, life truly does offer second chances.
