Alex Marquez delivered another composed and strategic performance at the 2025 Italian MotoGP, finishing second behind brother Marc Marquez after navigating a tense early clash between the factory Ducati duo.
The Gresini Ducati rider watched from third as Marc and Francesco Bagnaia went head-to-head in a fierce battle up front. But the situation nearly turned chaotic when Bagnaia clipped the rear of Marc’s bike at the exit of Turn 3.
“It was so risky because I was not expecting that collision between Pecco and Marc,” said Alex. “I picked up the bike and saved the contact. Luckily, nothing happened — that’s the most important thing.”
With the factory pair slowing each other down through repeated overtakes, Alex seized his opportunity. A mistake by Bagnaia at the final corner opened the door, and with a slipstream down the straight, Alex jumped into the lead on lap 6.
“I didn’t want to get involved too early, but when I saw the pace drop, I knew I had to go for it,” he explained. “It was difficult to overtake them, but that moment was clear — I made the move.”
Alex held the lead for three laps, managing tyres while trying to control the race pace. But Marc soon countered with a decisive pass and ultimately built a two-second gap to take his 93rd GP win.
“Marc was just better than us today,” Alex admitted. “But it was still a great weekend. We finished ahead of Pecco, and we’ve taken second in the championship.”
The result strengthens Alex’s status as one of the title contenders. He now sits 40 points behind Marc at the top of the standings and 70 points ahead of Bagnaia heading into next weekend’s Dutch TT at Assen — a track that traditionally suits the younger Marquez.
