Alex Márquez Takes MotoGP Championship Lead: “If You Told Me, I’d Say You’re Crazy!”

Alex Márquez continues his streak of second-place finishes, earning his sixth consecutive P2 in the 2025 MotoGP season. With his brother Marc crashing out of the lead at COTA, Alex capitalized on the opportunity and now leads the championship for the first time in his premier-class career.

Starting strong, the Gresini rider held second in the opening laps before being overtaken by Francesco Bagnaia. However, when Marc fell on lap nine, Alex regained the position and crossed the finish line just two seconds behind Bagnaia.

“If you told me before the season that I’d be leading the championship, I would have said, ‘You’re crazy!’” Alex admitted with a smile. “We are ‘Mr. P2,’ but I don’t mind! I’d happily take P2 all the way to the end.”

Despite his success, Alex admitted that the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) was his most challenging race so far compared to Thailand and Argentina.

“This was the toughest round for me in terms of feeling and cornering. I saw early on that the others were faster, and after a big moment at Turn 10, I decided to stay calm and settle for third,” he explained. “Then when I saw Marc crash, I told myself to stay focused.”

Reflecting on his progress, Alex emphasized the importance of consistency and enjoying the moment:

“I’m really happy with how we’re managing everything. Being consistently in the top three is exactly what we need to do. But more than anything, we need to enjoy this moment because, for an independent team running last year’s bike, leading the championship is incredible.”

With two Sprint wins in 2023 but no Sunday MotoGP victory yet, Alex now holds a one-point lead over Marc as the championship heads to Qatar for Round 4.
