Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli believes his rookie experience has been instrumental in his rise to the top of the 2026 Formula 1 standings, with the Italian driver feeling “stronger” and “more in control” ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. After making history as the sport’s youngest championship leader thanks to back-to-back wins in China and Japan, Antonelli holds a nine-point edge over teammate George Russell.
Reflecting on his growth, Antonelli credited last season’s learning curve for his improved preparation and composure. “I think, overall, I feel stronger. I feel more in control of the situation… Having done all the tracks last year, definitely it’s helping this year so far. Also, having done a race weekend also helps because I know better what to expect,” he explained. “The experience of last year is playing a massive role into this year so far. I just feel more relaxed, more confident.”
Despite a fast start to the campaign, Antonelli is determined to stay grounded and focus on each race as it comes. “The season got off to a better start than what we all anticipated, so expectations are automatically a bit different now. But I want to focus on the present and maximise every time I go in the car, raising the bar little by little, especially with George being super strong and competitors getting closer.”
During the recent five-week break, Antonelli kept himself sharp with simulator work, a Pirelli tyre test, and GT driving. He used the downtime to reflect on his early success, train physically, and prepare for the season’s demanding triple headers. “It’s going to be important on the physical side to make the best out of this break, to recharge the batteries and get stronger… I really miss racing, but I’ve tried to make the best out of it.”
Looking to Miami, Antonelli’s goal is clear: “The goal ready for Miami is to be back from where we left in Japan, or even be back even stronger from where we left.”
As the championship battle intensifies, Antonelli insists that his relationship with Russell remains “very strong,” built on mutual respect and teamwork. “Of course, I feel like I can be a challenger and that’s what I’m here for,” he stated. “We have a very strong car. Both of us, we don’t want to waste this opportunity, so we’re going to do our best. But we’re also very aware it’s important to keep a good dynamic in the team… I believe our relationship is strong and will be strong for the rest of the year.”
With his sights set on continued success, Antonelli is poised to push both himself and Mercedes as the F1 season resumes in Miami.
