Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle believes Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli are currently evenly matched, with their blend of experience and youthful speed creating one of the sport’s most compelling intra-team rivalries. Brundle’s comments came after a tense Canadian Grand Prix, where Antonelli and Russell clashed both in the Sprint and the main event before Russell’s race was cut short by a technical failure.
“There’s nothing to choose between Russell and Antonelli at the moment,” Brundle wrote, noting that Russell’s experience and wisdom are balanced perfectly by Antonelli’s raw speed and enthusiasm. “That’s why they keep meeting in the middle of a corner.”
The pair traded places repeatedly, particularly at the Turn 10 hairpin, until Russell was sidelined with a rare power unit issue. Antonelli capitalized, claiming his fourth consecutive win and extending his championship lead over Russell to 43 points. Lewis Hamilton finished second, with Max Verstappen rounding out the podium for Red Bull in an event Brundle described as “thoroughly enjoyable and memorable.”
Brundle cautioned that the title race remains wide open, with strong competition expected from McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull. “There’s still a very long way to go,” he wrote, “but McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull are not going to stand still either.”
The Mercedes team dynamic will be under the spotlight again at the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix on June 5-7.
