BWF Members Approve 3×15 Scoring System to Modernize Badminton from 2027

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced the approval of a new 3×15 scoring system, following a decisive two‑thirds majority vote at the 87th BWF Annual General Meeting. The new format, set to take effect on Monday, 4 January 2027, marks a significant milestone in the sport’s evolution.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul hailed the decision as a step towards building a sport that resonates with younger generations while safeguarding the welfare and longevity of athletes. “The 3×15 scoring system is intended to deliver more exciting and competitive badminton, improved scheduling, more consistent match durations, and potential benefits for player welfare and recovery,” Leeswadtrakul stated. “By bringing high‑pressure moments earlier and creating tighter scores and more dramatic finishes, the format aims to keep fans engaged from the first rally to the last.”

The adoption of the new scoring format comes after extensive testing, analysis, and stakeholder consultation, reflecting the membership’s collective judgment and commitment to innovation and sustainability within the sport. Leeswadtrakul emphasized that while the format is changing, the essence of badminton remains intact: “The skill, the tactics, the physical and mental demands, and the drama of the sport will remain. This change strengthens badminton by protecting what makes it special and ensuring the world’s best players can continue to compete, inspire, and connect with fans globally for longer.”

BWF has pledged to maintain open communication with Members, stakeholders, and players as the sport transitions to the new scoring system. The focus now shifts to ensuring a smooth and well‑managed implementation process, with the goal of delivering clear guidance and continuity for all involved.

The meeting also saw former BWF President and Honorary Life Vice President Poul-Erik Høyer inducted into the BWF Hall of Fame in the Administrator Category, honoring his exceptional contributions to the governance and global growth of badminton.

Leeswadtrakul concluded, “Today’s decision confirms our shared commitment to the long‑term relevance and sustainability of badminton. It has been shaped by open discussion and a common purpose to strengthen the future of our sport.”

The 3×15 system is expected to usher in a new era, delivering more dynamic and engaging badminton to players and fans worldwide.
