Alex Marquez has emerged as the biggest surprise of the 2025 MotoGP season, becoming the closest challenger to his brother, Marc Marquez, in the fight for the world championship. According to renowned MotoGP analyst Carlo Pernat, Alex’s rapid rise is largely thanks to the motorcycle he’s riding—last season’s title-winning Desmosedici GP24.
Riding for Gresini Ducati, Alex has been in top form from the start of the season. He has secured five main race podiums from the first eight rounds, including a victory at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. Most recently, he finished second behind Marc at the Aragon GP. His consistent performances have placed him second in the overall standings with 201 points.
1. Riding the Proven 2024 Championship Bike
Pernat credits Alex’s strong form to the fact that he’s riding a proven machine. The GP24 was the same model that helped Jorge Martin clinch the title last year. Meanwhile, factory Ducati riders Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia are on the latest spec bikes, which still require further development. Bagnaia, in particular, has struggled to find the right setup.
“Alex is definitely surprising people. But it makes sense because he’s on the untouched 2024 spec bike. That machine has allowed him to make a big leap forward,” Pernat told Motosan on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
2. Finally Showing His True Potential
Pernat is also pleased to see Alex Marquez finally showing the form many expected after his Moto2 and Moto3 world titles. Having switched teams and machines in the past, Alex now appears to have found a setup that matches his riding style and allows him to compete consistently at the front of the grid.
