Chan Peng Soon Supports BWF’s New 15-Point Scoring System

Former Olympic silver medallist Chan Peng Soon believes the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) reintroduction of the 15-point scoring system will bring fresh excitement to the sport. The system, set to be tested in selected tournaments from April to October, could replace the current 21-point format.

Peng Soon welcomes the change, noting that it may benefit players, especially senior shuttlers, by reducing fatigue and potentially extending careers. He argues that the 21-point system is physically demanding, and a shift could make matches just as exciting while easing the strain on players.

“The new system won’t eliminate long rallies or strategic play, but it will reduce fatigue as games won’t stretch to 30 points in a deuce,” he explained. Having played under different formats, he believes players will adapt quickly.

The 15-point format has been proposed multiple times, including in 2021, but failed to gain enough support. The current 21-point system has been in place since 2006, making it the longest-standing format in modern badminton.
