Egypt Target Historic World Cup Win as Salah Seeks Lasting Legacy

As Egypt prepares for the 2026 World Cup, all eyes are on Mohamed Salah, who is determined to deliver a breakthrough moment for his nation in what is likely his final appearance on football’s biggest stage. Despite their dominance in African football—with a record seven continental titles—the Pharaohs have yet to record a single win in three previous World Cup appearances.

Salah’s 2018 World Cup campaign was derailed by injury after a controversial Champions League final clash with Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos. Although he scored twice in Russia, Egypt exited at the group stage after three straight defeats.

Now 33, Salah arrives at the twilight of his Liverpool career, having scored 257 goals, won two Premier League titles, and lifted the Champions League. Beyond his on-field exploits, Salah has become an influential figure worldwide, using his platform to advocate for gender equality and humanitarian causes.

Egyptian fans hope their “Egyptian King” will finally shine on the global stage. “For me, Salah is the best player in the world,” said Egypt forward Mahmoud Hassan (Trezeguet). “His presence is extremely important for us. Not only as a star, but also as a leader who gives us confidence and strength.” Salah and Trezeguet combined for 14 of Egypt’s 20 goals in qualifying.

Although Salah’s final Liverpool season was below his usual standards, his international form offers hope. Egypt, drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran, has reason for optimism after impressive recent results.

Former captain Ahmed Fathi is confident: “He always made the difference, and I hope he will do it again in the United States.” As Salah seeks to cap his career with a World Cup win for Egypt, a nation waits for its hero to deliver a moment worthy of his legendary status.
