Fermin Aldeguer Shares Positive Update After Serious Leg Injury

Gresini MotoGP rider Fermin Aldeguer has shared his first update since undergoing surgery for a serious leg injury, offering an encouraging message as he begins his recovery.

The 20-year-old was training at the Aspar Circuit in Valencia last week, less than a month before pre-season testing starts in Malaysia in early February. During the session, the Indonesian Grand Prix winner suffered a heavy crash that resulted in a fractured femur, and he was subsequently taken to Barcelona to undergo surgery.

Gresini Racing confirmed over the weekend that the operation was successful, though no official recovery timeline has been provided. While the duration of Aldeguer’s absence remains unclear, he posted a positive message on social media on Tuesday, indicating that the most difficult part of the process is now over and that he is focused on returning as soon as possible.

Several high-profile riders were present at the Aspar circuit at the time of the incident, including Marc Marquez and Maverick Vinales, as well as Ducati test rider Michele Pirro. Pirro later described the crash as a serious one.

Femur fractures typically require a long recovery period, and Aldeguer is expected to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines. Although Gresini has yet to make an official announcement, it is unlikely he will take part in either pre-season test or the opening round of the season in Thailand.

Ducati and Gresini have limited replacement options. Pirro is usually Ducati’s go-to substitute, but his testing duties are especially critical this year as the manufacturer pushes forward with development of its 2027 bike, making a race appearance less likely.

Another option could be World Superbike star Nicolo Bulega, who would be eligible to ride in the Sepang test and the opening two rounds of the season. Bulega is already scheduled to assist with Ducati’s 2027 development later in the year, and additional mileage on current machinery could be valuable for data collection.

Gresini Racing is set to unveil its 2026 livery during its season launch event in Malaysia on January 31.
