Fernando Alonso has opened up about the pivotal moment that convinced him to continue racing in Formula 1 through 2027, crediting the fan reception at the Barcelona Grand Prix as the “turning point” for his decision. The two-time world champion recently announced he’ll remain with Aston Martin for at least another year, putting retirement rumors to rest.
In an interview with AS, Alonso revealed that the passionate support he received from Spanish fans during the Barcelona weekend was decisive: “I have to say it was a turning point. I hadn’t made the decision, nor had I stopped to think about it, but when I was at the fan forum… it really touched me to see all the fans. They believe in me; their passion for Formula 1 and my results remains undiminished.”
Alonso described the atmosphere as one of excitement and anticipation, not nostalgia: “My impression… was that people weren’t there to enjoy the grand prix as if it were my last, but rather they were excited as if it were the beginning of my career. The flame of ‘Alonsomania’ and F1 in Spain is very much alive.”
Despite Aston Martin’s struggles on track, Alonso, now 45, insists that performance is not the only factor in his continued motivation. Looking ahead, he’s left the door open for more seasons beyond 2027: “No, I don’t think this will be my last year in Formula 1. I’m enjoying it now… I think I can continue for several more years.”
With renewed passion from both driver and fans, Alonso’s F1 journey is set to continue well into the future.
