Pep Guardiola knows his Manchester City side must dig deep as they prepare for a crucial showdown against Premier League leaders Liverpool, despite their recent struggles.
“We are in a dark place right now,” admitted Guardiola. “It’s been difficult, but we have to find a way through and get back to our best.”
City’s recent form has been concerning, with their latest setback coming in the form of a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid, sealing their Champions League exit with a 6-3 aggregate loss. The disappointment in Europe has added to their domestic challenges, as they now find themselves fighting to stay in the title race.
Liverpool, on the other hand, are flying high at the top of the table, eight points clear of Arsenal. With the Gunners playing earlier, City could find themselves under even more pressure when they step onto the pitch. Guardiola knows that if his team wants to stay in contention, they need a strong response.
“We have to be solid, especially at the back,” he emphasized. “Liverpool are relentless, and if we are not at our best, they will punish us.”
Much of City’s hopes may rest on Erling Haaland, who is racing against time to recover from a knee injury suffered against Newcastle. His presence could be crucial in a match where City need firepower to counter Liverpool’s attacking threats.
“It won’t be easy,” said Guardiola. “But we are at home, and we have to fight. This team has been through difficult moments before, and we have always found a way to respond.”
