Guardiola hints at resting Haaland for Swansea clash as Rodri remains sidelined

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is considering giving star striker Erling Haaland a rest for Wednesday’s League Cup fourth-round tie against Championship side Swansea City.

Haaland, who hit the post late in City’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday, could be given time to recover after picking up a knock. “I haven’t seen him today, but it’s getting better day by day,” Guardiola said. “We’ll train this afternoon and decide if he can play. Yeah, this is a game where we could rest Erling.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Rodri remains out with a hamstring injury suffered before the October international break. Guardiola confirmed the Spaniard is still in recovery: “Rodri is getting better, training with us, but not yet ready. Hopefully soon.”

City are expected to rotate their lineup for the trip to South Wales, with Guardiola insisting his side won’t underestimate their lower-league opponents. “We always take these games seriously,” he said. “That’s why we’ve had success in the past.”

Kalvin Phillips, who has featured only once this season, could make the squad but remains uncertain to start. “Maybe he will travel with us,” Guardiola said. “He’s an unbelievable guy and a joy to have in the locker room.”
