Haaland Double Not Enough as Monaco Hold Man City in Champions League

Erling Haaland struck twice but Manchester City were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Monaco in the Champions League after Eric Dier’s late penalty denied Pep Guardiola’s men victory on Wednesday night.

Haaland netted in the 15th and 37th minutes, either side of a brilliant strike from Jordan Teze, taking his season tally to 11 goals in just eight games and extending his record to 52 goals in 50 Champions League appearances.

City looked set to collect all three points until the 90th minute, when Nico Gonzalez was penalised for a high boot on Dier after a lengthy VAR review. The English defender stepped up to calmly convert from the spot, securing Monaco’s first point of the group phase.

Guardiola was left frustrated by the decision but praised his team’s overall display.

“I don’t know if it was a penalty, but it was given. Nico touched the ball first, no intention. But it is what it is. We have a point and we will take it,” the City boss told TNT Sports.

The result leaves City on four points from two games following their opening win over Napoli, while Monaco claimed a morale-boosting draw after a tough start.
