Honda Tipped to Be Title Contender in 2027 Amid Jorge Martin Switch Rumours

Honda’s MotoGP revival continues to gain momentum, with test rider Aleix Espargaro expressing full confidence that the Japanese manufacturer will be fighting for the world championship once the new 850cc regulations take effect in 2027.

Espargaro, who made a wildcard appearance for Honda at the Spanish Grand Prix, believes Honda’s transformation is well underway following their strongest start to a season in over two years. The breakthrough includes Johann Zarco’s shock win in wet conditions at the French Grand Prix—marking a major turning point for the struggling HRC project.

Speaking to Marca, Espargaro emphasized the seriousness of Honda’s rebuild:

“Honda is the greatest power in this sport… There are no half measures. The test team is strong, and they’re doing whatever it takes. It’s just a matter of time.”

Espargaro added that podiums could arrive as early as 2026 if engine progress continues, and he has “no doubt” that Honda’s 2027 prototype will be championship-ready.

This bold outlook coincides with growing speculation around Jorge Martin, who reportedly could trigger a performance clause to leave Aprilia early and join Honda in 2026. Espargaro, ironically one of the key voices behind Aprilia signing Martin, commented before the rumours broke but was already optimistic about Honda’s appeal as a destination for top riders.

The factory team has a potential seat available with Luca Marini’s contract expiring at the end of 2025, further fuelling rider market speculation.
