Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin has suffered another major setback after breaking his hand in a training accident, ruling him out of the upcoming Argentina Grand Prix. This unfortunate injury further delays his highly anticipated debut with Aprilia, pushing it back to at least the US Grand Prix in Austin.
Martin, who had already faced challenges during pre-season testing, sustained a left-hand fracture that has been slow to heal. MotoGP’s chief doctor, Angel Charte, confirmed on Thursday that the recovery process has been progressing at a cautious pace, making it impossible for Martin to compete in Argentina. This latest development adds to his recent struggles, forcing him to sit out another crucial race at the start of the 2025 season.
Despite the setback, Martin remains optimistic and determined to return as soon as possible. “He is in high spirits, as always,” Charte told TV broadcaster DAZN. However, the primary concern for medical experts is ensuring that Martin’s scaphoid bone heals correctly. Dr. Xavier Mir and Charte have been closely monitoring his condition, and after discussions with Martin, they have ruled him out of both the Thailand and Argentina rounds.
Charte emphasized that the recovery process must be handled with extreme caution to prevent long-term complications. “It’s a slow process. If the fracture doesn’t heal correctly, it could cause lasting issues. We’ll likely conduct a test before Texas to assess his fitness,” he explained.
With his absence from Argentina now confirmed, Martin’s return to racing will depend on how well his recovery progresses over the coming weeks. His participation in the US Grand Prix in Austin hinges on passing crucial medical tests before the race weekend. For now, fans will have to wait a little longer to see the reigning world champion back in action on his new Aprilia machine.
