MotoGP star Jorge Martin is still sidelined following a horrific crash in Qatar that left him with multiple injuries and an uncertain return timeline.
Martin, now recovering in Spain, suffered 11 rib fractures and lung damage during the opening grand prix of 2025 — his first race back after already missing earlier rounds due to a hand injury.
Former world champion Neil Hodgson shared his own experience with similar injuries, offering insight into the long recovery process:
“I broke every rib on my left side. I had fractures, a collapsed lung, and the worst part is how sensitive the lungs are. Fluid builds up, and draining it is awful.”
Hodgson added:
“If you’ve ever fractured one rib, you know how painful sneezing can be. Now imagine all of them. When I saw a photo of Jorge in hospital, he looked worse than I’ve ever seen him.”
The crash that sidelined Martin was relatively normal, but bad luck played a part when he clipped Fabio di Giannantonio in front of him. It marked Martin’s third major injury in a short span.
While speculation suggests he may be out for two to three months, his fitness level and access to advanced treatment, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, could aid his recovery.
Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola said Martin is being treated “like a son,” with no pressure to rush back.
There was a small positive update from MotoGP medical director Ángel Charte, who recently stated that Martin now has “perfect lungs.”
