Kane rues missed chance as England held by Ghana at World Cup

England captain Harry Kane admitted he was disappointed after missing a late golden opportunity in his side’s frustrating 0-0 draw against Ghana, a result that delayed their qualification for the World Cup knockout stages.

The best chance of the match arrived in the closing minutes when Nico O’Reilly’s powerful header crashed against the crossbar. The rebound fell perfectly for Kane just six yards from goal, but the Bayern Munich striker unexpectedly fired over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

The miss left England fans stunned behind the goal, with Kane widely regarded as one of the most clinical finishers in world football.

“It was the kind of game as a striker where you’re waiting for one opportunity to come your way,” Kane said after the match.

“The ball fell to me exactly how I wanted, but I just couldn’t quite get over it. I’m backing myself to score that chance more often than not, but these things happen in football.”

The England skipper, who scored twice in the opening 4-2 victory over Croatia, was visibly frustrated after the miss, holding his head in disbelief as Ghana celebrated a valuable point that moved them closer to the Round of 32.

Had Kane converted the chance, he would have surpassed England legend Gary Lineker’s World Cup scoring record of 10 goals. Instead, he remains level with the former striker while still chasing the tournament’s Golden Boot award.

England manager Thomas Tuchel also acknowledged the significance of the missed opportunity.

“Normally, that’s a clear goal for us,” Tuchel said. “It was a big chance and it would have been a deserved winner based on the pressure we created late in the game.”

Despite dominating possession for long periods, England struggled to break down Ghana’s disciplined defensive structure and were forced to settle for a point.

The draw leaves England on four points from two matches and still in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages. Tuchel’s side will now look to secure progression when they face Panama in their final Group L fixture in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

For Kane, meanwhile, the focus remains on putting the miss behind him and continuing his pursuit of more World Cup goals as England’s campaign continues.
