Liverpool Honour Diogo Jota in Emotional Return at Preston

Liverpool returned to the pitch for the first time since Diogo Jota’s tragic death, defeating Preston 3-1 in a heartfelt pre-season friendly that paid tribute to the late forward.

Jota, 28, passed away on July 3 alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car accident just days after marrying Rute Cardoso. The emotional match at Deepdale opened with “You’ll Never Walk Alone” ringing through the stadium, followed by a minute’s silence and both teams wearing black armbands.

Preston captain Ben Whiteman laid a wreath before kick-off in front of the travelling Reds fans, who sang Jota’s chant — proclaiming him better than Figo — throughout the day.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Jota as “a champion in everything,” citing his recent achievements: winning the Premier League with Liverpool, lifting the Nations League with Portugal, and getting married.

“His last month was one of triumph in all areas of life — family, club, and country,” Slot said.

The Reds started with Mohamed Salah as captain and honoured Jota’s legacy with a composed performance. Goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo — all of whom attended Jota’s funeral in Gondomar — led Liverpool to victory.

Flags bearing “forever our number 20” were seen across the stands. Liverpool have confirmed that Jota’s number 20 shirt will be permanently retired.

Slot and several players had earlier visited the growing shrine of tributes outside Anfield. “We will always carry him with us,” the manager said.

Debuts were handed to new signings Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez, while Florian Wirtz — Liverpool’s record signing — was not featured.

Fans believe this tragedy could become a source of unity and purpose. “It’s hit the city hard,” said supporter Thomas McAllister. “It feels like losing family.”

Liverpool’s pre-season continues with matches in Asia, including a clash with AC Milan in Hong Kong on July 26 and a game against Yokohama F. Marinos on July 30.
