Luca Marini has opened up about the challenge of stepping into the space left by eight-time world champion Marc Marquez, admitting it took time for Honda engineers to fully trust his input.
After scoring only 14 points in his first season with HRC, Marini made a major leap forward in his second year, finishing the campaign with 142 points. While his feedback to the technical team remained consistent, the Italian noted that the engineers’ confidence in his direction had a major impact on the bike’s development.
Marini explained that arriving after Marquez meant he had to prove himself before his guidance carried weight. Over time, through tests and races, he felt the engineers began acting on his requests, recognising the qualities he brought to the team.
He added that earning trust takes time in any team, but even more so at Honda, a brand used to constant success. With the factory currently rebuilding, Marini believes the work done now will help Honda return to the front next season.
The former VR46 Ducati rider also highlighted that leadership goes beyond technical feedback. Creating a positive environment in the garage is crucial during the packed modern MotoGP schedule, and maintaining stability helps both mechanics and engineers perform at their best.
Honda’s improved performance has also moved them up from concession class D to C for 2026, signalling progress in their ongoing recovery.
