Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazil international Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £62.5 million.
The 26-year-old forward is set to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for a one-year extension. The deal is subject to visa approval and registration.
“Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha,” the club announced. “Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
Cunha impressed last season with 18 goals across all competitions and was named Wolves’ Player of the Year. Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, he scored 33 goals in 92 appearances for the Midlands club.
United triggered Cunha’s release clause, making him new manager Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer window. Wolves confirmed that the transfer was a club-record sale and thanked Cunha for his service.
Cunha will now join Brazil for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Ecuador — the first match under new head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Manchester United, who finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, are aiming to bolster a misfiring attack. The team’s lack of cutting edge was exposed again in that final.
Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked to the club, though United’s summer transfer activity is restricted due to financial fair play rules and their absence from next season’s Champions League.
“We do have a plan to bring in new players, but our main focus is on improving the current squad and the academy,” said Amorim during United’s post-season tour of Asia. “With the financial rules in place, we’re not expecting major changes this summer, and we’re prepared for that.”
